"Guess the number"

Rules:
  • Close your eyes and open your ears.
  • Count in your head.
I will drop cubes in the box, and you need to guess how many cubes I dropped.
Guessing and sharing thinking strategies:
  • What amount did you come up with?
  • What strategies did you use?
  • Is your strategy different or similar?
  • What is more than this?
  • What is less than this?
*When students are familiar with the game, include real- world problems.

Count around the circle
Rules:
  • Listen to your friends.
  • Count in your head.
  • Give some think time.
The teacher can start with a number. Each student will get to say a number as they count around the circle.
Counting can be by ones or by tens, and it can be backward and forward.
Thinking questions:
  1. If we count around the circle and start with 0, what number do you think the last student will say?
  2. If we count around the circle starting with 10, what number will we stop at?
  3. If I start with 10 and we are counting backward, will all students say a number?
  4. If we count around the circle two times, what number will we stop on?
  5. If Adam said 5, what number would Zaya say?
